Selkirk Judo Club Athletes Excel At Nationals

Three members of the Selkirk Judo Club competed at the National Judo Championships held in Edmonton from May 16 – 19, 2019.

Sarah Ekosky, a 15 year old brown belt, was a double medalist at the nationals. For the second year in a row, she is national champion in U16 Female under 57 kg. There were 16 competitors in her division and she finished with 4 straight wins by ippon (full point) to claim the top spot on the podium. Sarah turned in a dominant performance in each of her matches, including a quick gold medal match against Kiera Burt from Ontario.

In the U18 age division, facing 18 other competitors in her category, Sarah won 4 straight matches before losing in the final to Kiera Westlake from Alberta. Sarah became the first athlete from the Selkirk Club ever to win two medals at the same nationals.

Justin Ekosky, an 18 year old black belt, opened with 3 straight wins to reach the semi-final in U21 Men under 73 kg. After a loss in the semi-final, Justin had a hard fought match for the bronze medal but was unable to best Orlando Horak from Quebec. Justin finished 5th in his division of 21 competitors. Justin also competed in Senior Men under 73 kg but did not place.

Damien Ekosky, a 19 year old black belt who has regularly fought in under 73 kg, moved down to 66 kg for this event. With 26 fighters in his division, Damien won 4 straight matches to reach the gold medal final. He then went the distance against Julien Frascadore from Quebec, narrowly losing the match by a half point score. Damien also competed in the Senior Men under 73 kg division but did not place.

“Damien, Justin and Sarah each had an excellent performance at the nationals this year. This is a very difficult competition and they compete in some of the largest and toughest weight categories in the tournament in their respective age divisions,” commented Brian Jones, one of the club’s coaches.
