Selkirk Judo Club Team Wins Medals in Edmonton

The Selkirk Judo Club sent a team of 7 athletes to the Edmonton International Judo Championships held at the West Edmonton Mall on March 9 – 11, 2018. There were over 800 entries in this event with fighters from across Canada and from the United States.

Damien Ekosky, coming off a gold medal performance in Vancouver the previous weekend, finished with a perfect 3 – 0 record to win gold in U21 under 73 kg. He defeated Daniel Chosack-Barkay from Quebec in the final of this 8 person division.

Damien also fought in the senior men age division. After a bye through the first round, he put together three straight victories to reach the gold medal final. After a hard fought match that went into overtime, Damien lost to Salama Salem from the US. He claimed the silver medal in a division of 22 competitors.

Justin Ekosky won bronze in U18 under 73 kg. He won his first two matches before losing in the quarter-finals. He went on to win three straight matches, including the bronze medal match against Kai Richardson. Selkirk’s Bailey Malinowski finished with a 1 – 2 record in the same division, out of a podium position.

Sarah Ekosky won bronze in U16 Girls under 57 kg. She won her first two matches, lost in the semi-final and then defeated Loveena McCorkell in the bronze medal match.

Schaelyce Kopp, Connor Macfarlane and Lennon Kuch also competed but did not place.

The club’s next tournament will be the Balmoral Open in Stonewall on March 24.
