Three Medals for Selkirk Judoka at the Western Canada Summer Games

Four members of the Selkirk Judo Club fought for Manitoba at the 2015 Western Canada Summer Games held in Wood Buffalo, Alberta.  The individual portion of the tournament took place on Aug 8 – 9.  The Games brought together athletes from the four Western provinces and the 3 territories.

Damien Ekosky won five straight matches by ippon (a full point) to claim a gold in under 66kg.  He defeated Adam Thomson from Alberta in the gold medal match.  His victory caps a season in which he also earned silver at the Canada Winter Games and bronze at the Elite 8 National Championships.  

Justin Ekosky earned a bronze medal in under 60kg, defeating Alex Li from Saskatchewan in the bronze medal match.  Teammate Tanner Onagi won bronze in under 55kg.  He beat Nick Skaf from Saskatchewan in the medal match.  Riley Malinowski finished 4th in his division.

Overall the 9 person Manitoba judo team finished with 1 gold, 1 silver and 5 bronze medals.

In the team portion of the event held on August 10, the Manitoba men's judo team finished in 4th place.  They lost the bronze medal match 3-2 to Alberta.

During each team match, each of 5 athletes compete against the athlete from the other team in their respective weight division. 

“Our Selkirk athletes gave a great effort at the Games.  We are very pleased with the excellent year they have all had in training and competition," said Brian Jones, one of the club's coaches.
