Julien Mitchell selected for Canada Winter Games

Julien Mitchell (17 years old, brown belt) of the Selkirk Judo Club has been selected to represent Manitoba in the judo competition at the upcoming Canada Winter Games.  The Winter Games take place in Halifax in February 2011 with the judo competition set for February 23 – 26.  The judo event consists of an individual event (Feb 23 and 24) and a team competition (Feb 26).  Julien will compete in the under 100 kg weight division.

“Julien has worked hard for this selection and his spot on the team is well deserved,” said coach Brian Jones.  Julien is a two-time junior national medallist, with bronze medals at the 2008 and 2009 Junior Nationals.  In his first year in a new age division (17 – 20 year olds), he was 5th at the nationals in 2010.  He has won numerous medals at other high level competitions, including silver at the 2009 US Junior Open in Florida, silver at the 2009 Pacific International Senior tournament in Vancouver and gold at the 2009 Am-Can International Judo Challenge in Buffalo, New York. 

Julien was also the 2010 winner of the David Caligiuri Memorial Award, given each year to a promising young Manitoba judo athlete who is excelling in and shows dedication to the sport and who is a good role model for other young athletes.  He was also chosen as a winner of a 2010 Tri S Sport Alliance award as outstanding competitor for the Selkirk Judo Club.
