Mitchell wins Bronze at the Canada Winter Games

Julien Mitchell competed in judo at the Canada Winter Games held in Halifax, Nova Scotia from February 11 - 27, 2011.  On February 24, Julien competed in the individual portion of the judo competition, in the – 100 kg men’s division.  He finished with a record of 1 win and 2 losses.

On February 26, Julien competed with the Manitoba team in the men’s team judo competition.  Each team of 5 athletes competes in a single elimination tournament.  Nine provinces were represented in this competition.  Team Manitoba fought its first match against Team PEI and won the team match 5 – 0. Julien won his match by an ippon (full point) score. 

Julien did not compete in the next round against the eventual gold medalist, Team Quebec.  There are 7 male athletes on the Manitoba team for the individual competition but only 5 spots in the team competition, so different athletes may be sent out for each round.  Manitoba lost to Quebec 5 – 0.     

Team Manitoba finished with a win against Team New Brunswick in the bronze medal match.  Team Manitoba won the team match 4 wins to 1.  Julien defeated his opponent in a mere six seconds. 

Overall, the Manitoba judo team finished with six medals in the individual competition (1 gold, 1 silver and 4 bronze) and one medal in the team competition.  Judo accounted for 7 out of 25 medals won by Manitoba at the Games.
