St. Boniface Open Judo Tournament

Fourteen fighters from the Selkirk Judo Club competed at the St. Boniface Open Judo Tournament held at Churchill High School on November 4, 2017. The Selkirk Club returned with three gold, four silver and three bronze medals.

Winning gold were Bailey Malinowski in U18 Men under 73 kg, Danny Ekosky in U12 under 50 kg and Schaelyce Kopp in U21 Women under 57 kg.

Silver medals were awarded to Dylan Wiebe in U12 under 50 kg, Lachlan Patton in U12 under 36 kg, Sarah Ekosky in U21 Women under 57 kg and Matthew Parobec in U16 Men under 55 kg.

Connor Macfarlane earned a bronze in U16 Men over 73 kg, as did Brody Malinowski in U14 Boys under 66 kg and Schaelyce Kopp in Senior Women under 57 kg.

Four fighters from the club participated in the U10 age division, where ranking is not determined.

Quebec Open

Meanwhile, on November 4 – 5, Damien and Justin Ekosky competed at the Quebec Open in Montreal. The tournament drew approximately 1000 competitors from Canada, the United States and other countries.

Damien Ekosky finished with a bronze medal in U21 Men under 73 kg. With 18 competitors in his division, he finished with a record of 3 wins and 1 loss.

Justin Ekosky finished 7th in U18 Men under 73 kg with a record of 3 wins and 2 losses. There were 24 competitors in his division.

Both Damien and Justin also competed in Senior Men under 73 kg, one of the toughest divisions in the tournament with 35 competitors. Damien finished 9th overall with 3 wins and 2 losses in this division.
