Two Selkirk Judo Club Fighters Earn Provincial Championships

The Selkirk Judo Club hosted the Provincial Judo Championships at the Lord Selkirk High School on December 2, 2017.  Seven competitors from the Selkirk Club competed and the team won 4 silver medals and 1 bronze medal to go with the team’s two gold.

Justin Ekosky (16, brown belt) won his third straight provincials.  This year, his victory came in U18 Men under 73 kg.  Justin won three straight matches to claim gold. 

Sarah Ekosky (13, blue) struck gold in U16 Women under 57 kg.  This was her first provincial championship.  Sarah also finished with a 3-0 record in her matches.

“This is our second consecutive year hosting provincials and the event ran smoothly again this year,” said Brian Jones, one of the club’s coaches. “Our athletes performed very well and our volunteers did an excellent job.”

In other news, Damien Ekosky, who was kept out of competition at the provincials due to injury, has been selected to attend the Elite 8 Invitational National Championships in Senior Men under 73 kg.  This tournament will be held in Montreal on January 13 – 14, 2018.  The top 8 fighters in each weight division are invited to this event.     

The Selkirk team’s next action will be at the Saskatchewan Open in Regina on January 27 – 28.
