Selkirk Athletes Reach the Podium at Canadian National Judo Championships

Four members of the Selkirk Judo Club competed at the Canadian National Judo Championships held in Calgary on May 26 - 28, 2017.  There were over 800 entries in this competition from across Canada.

Sarah Ekosky won a silver medal in U16 Girls under 52 kg.  Sarah is 13 years old and was granted special permission to compete at the nationals as she was below the age requirements for the U16 division.  In her category of 12 fighters, Sarah won her first three matches in impressive style before dropping a hard fought match in the gold medal final to Emma Waldwell from Alberta.

In his first year in the U21 age division, Damien Ekosky won bronze in the under 73 kg weight category.  There were 15 competitors in this division.  Damien won his opening match again Daniel Marjerrison from Ontario.  He lost his second match to a fighter from Quebec, before regaining his form and winning three straight matches to claim bronze.  He defeated a long-time nemesis, Mitchell Wolfe from BC, in the bronze medal match.  Damien’s bronze medal adds to a growing collection of national medals (Gold in 2014 (U16) and 2016 (U18) and Bronze in 2013 (U16)).

Damien also competed in the Senior Men under 73 kg division but did not place.  Selkirk teammates Aaron Haak (U18 under 81 kg) and Justin Ekosky (U18 under 66 kg and U21 under 66 kg) fought well in their divisions but did not reach the podium.  Justin finished 9th out of 28 competitors in his U18 division.

"Our athletes had a strong performance at nationals after a year of hard work preparing and developing their judo", said one of the club's coaches, Brian Jones.
