Two Selkirk Judo Club Fighters Earn Provincial Championships

Six competitors from the Selkirk Judo Club competed at the Provincial Judo Championships held in Virden on April 2, 2016.  The Club finished with 2 gold and 2 silver medals.

Winning his fifth consecutive provincial championship was Damien Ekosky (16, brown belt) in Senior Men Advanced under 73 kg.  Damien, usually a U18 fighter, competed in the older Senior Men division.  With 10 competitors in the division, he won 4 straight matches to claim gold.

Justin Ekosky (15, blue belt) won his first provincials in U16 Men under 66 kg, with teammate Bailey Malinowski (15, blue belt) finishing second in the same division.

Joey Kuch (16, brown belt) was also combined up into the Senior Men age division, taking a silver medal in the over 100 kg category.

Another Selkirk club member, James Colp, was selected by Judo Manitoba to be one of the referees at the provincial championships.  “James has been working hard to develop his refereeing skills, and was recently rewarded with a grading to his National C level referee rank at the Edmonton International tournament in mid-March,” said Brian Jones, one of the club’s coaches.

The Club will next compete at the Portage Open in Portage la Prairie on April 16.
