2015 St. Boniface Open Judo Tournament

Twenty-five fighters from the Selkirk Judo Club competed at the St. Boniface Open Judo Tournament held on November 14, 2015.  The Selkirk Club returned with six gold, six silver and two bronze medals. 

Winning gold were Justin Ekosky in U16 Men under 66 kg, Maddison Orvis in U16 Women under 52 kg, Damien Ekosky in U18 Men under 73 kg, Riley Malinowski in Senior Men under 73kg, Joey Kuch in Senior Men over 90 kg and Tanner Onagi in Senior Men under 66 kg.   

Silver medals were awarded to Loki Johnson in both U16 Men under 46 kg and U18 Men under 46 kg.  Silvers also went to Bailey Malinowski in U16 Men under 66 kg, Schaelyce Kopp in U18 Women under 52 kg, Bronwyn Morissette-Cooper in U16 under 52 kg and Franklin Martin in Senior Men under 73 kg

Aaron Haak won bronze in U18 under 73 kg and Jillian Berard won bronze in U14 Girls under 39 kg.

Eleven fighters from the club participated in the U10 and U12 age divisions, where ranking is not determined.

The Club also took home a trophy for Best Club Performance.  This was measured based on number of competitors attending and medals won.  Selkirk finished with 76 points while the second place club had 52. 

“It was nice to see our athletes rewarded for a great team effort with the Best Club Performance award,” said Brian Jones, one of the club’s coaches.

This concludes the tournament schedule for 2015.  The next tournament is the Elite 8 Invitational Nationals in Montreal on January 9 – 10, 2016 where Damien Ekosky, ranked 3rd in the country in U18 under 73 kg, will compete.  Following that, the Club will be in action at the Saskatchewan Open in Regina on January 23, 2016.
