Two Selkirk Judo Club Members Compete at Pacific International

The Selkirk Judo Club’s Damien Ekosky and Riley Malinowski competed at the 2014 Pacific International Judo Championships held at the Richmond Olympic Oval in Richmond, BC on February 15-16.  The tournament drew 294 entries from across Canada and from as far away as Japan and the Czech Republic.

On Saturday, Damien and Riley both competed in the U18 under 60 kg weight division.  Riley (15, blue belt) fought well but was unable to advance from his pool.  Damien (14, blue belt), fighting up an age division, won his first two matches and advanced from his pool to the semi-final.  After winning the semi-final, he defeated Georges St. Amour from Abbotsford in the final to claim gold.

On Sunday, Damien completed in his regular U16 under 60 kg division.  Fighting in a round robin format, he won his first three matches but was unable to continue in his fourth match due to illness.  He finished with a silver in this category.

“Both Riley and Damien fought very well in Vancouver.  Riley is showing good progress in his techniques and it showed at this competition.  Damien had another excellent performance, using several different scoring techniques to win 7 out of 8 matches in the two divisions he entered,” commented Brian Jones, one of the club’s coaches.
