Three Selkirk Judo Club Fighters Earn Provincial Championships

Fifteen competitors from the Selkirk Judo Club competed at the Provincial Judo Championships held in Portage la Prairie on May 4, 2013.  The Club finished with 8 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze medal.

Three members of the Club were crowned provincial champions.  The Provincial Championships are for competitors in the Under 15 years old (U15) and older age divisions.  A junior tournament for the Under 11 (U11) and Under 13 (U13) age divisions is run concurrently with the provincials.

Winning his second provincial championship was Damien Ekosky in U15 under 60 kg, finishing with 3 wins and no losses on the day.  Joey Kuch won the provincial title in U15 over 60 kg.  He also won three straight matches to collect the gold.  Julien Mitchell won gold in Senior Men Advanced under 100 kg.  After dropping his first match, he came back to win three straight and the provincial title. 

Also medalling in the Provincial Championship portion of the tournament were Lauryn Kolada with a silver medal in U15 Girls under 40 kg and Franklin Martin with a bronze in Senior Men Novice under 81 kg.   

In the junior competition, gold medals were awarded to Brookelyn McRae in U11 under 34 kg, Lennon Kuch in U11 under 45 kg, Connor Macfarlane in U11 under 39 kg, Justin Ekosky in U13 Boys under 46 kg and Loki Johnson in U13 Boys under 34 kg.   Josh Boulton won silver in U13 Boys under 55 kg.
