Inner City Open Judo Tournament

Twenty four athletes from the Selkirk Judo Club competed at the annual Inner City Open Judo Tournament at Tec Voc High School in Winnipeg on February 9.  The tournament drew 201 entries from Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Ontario.  The Club finished with eight gold, eight silver and two bronze medals.

Leading the way was Damien Ekosky (13, blue belt) who won gold in U15 boys under 66 kg.  Damien finished with a record of 4 wins and no losses in his division of 9 competitors.  He defeated Brandon Morrison of Lloydminster in the final to maintain his perfect record of six first place finishes in six tournaments this season.    

Also winning gold was Brookelyn McRae in U11 Girls under 30 kg, Connor Macfarlane in U11 Boys under 39 kg, Justin Ekosky in U13 Boys under 46 kg, Michael Popovic in U13 Boys under 50 kg Loki Johnson in U13 Boys under 34 kg, Jillian Berard in U13 Girls under 28 kg and Joey Kuch in U15 Boys over 66 kg.

Winning silver medals were Julien Mitchell in Senior Men Advanced under 100 kg, Mack Nault in U11 Boys under 30 kg, Lennon Kuch in U11 Boys under 45 kg, Bailey Malinowski in U13 Boys under 42 kg, Duke Nault in U13 Boys uner 50 kg, Lauryn Kolada in U15 Girls under 40 kg, Katie Simko in U15 Girls under 52 kg and Tanner Onagi in U18 Men under 55 kg.       

Bronze medals went to Brandon Berard in U13 Boys under 30 kg and Aidan Stanford in U13 Boys under 38 kg.               

On February 16, Julien Mitchell will compete with the provincial team at the Pacific International tournament in Vancouver.  The Selkirk Club will also be sending Damien Ekosky and Tanner Onagi to compete in Vancouver.
