Selkirk Judo Club

“Fighting for Charity” Fundraiser

The Selkirk Judo Club held its twelfth annual “Fighting for Charity” Fundraiser in support of Habitat for Humanity on Saturday, November 12, 2011 at the Selkirk High School.  Members of the club participating in this event raised money by collecting pledges and competing in a judo team competition.  All proceeds are donated to Habitat for Humanity projects in Selkirk.

Twenty-seven members of the club competed, while a number of other club members volunteered as referees, technical officials and event organizers.  Fighters were divided into seven teams and the teams competed in a double knockout, judo team competition.  The team of Brandyn Cassidy, Steven Simko, Devyn Ballance and Aidan Moffatt won the tournament.  Silver went to the team of Joey Kuch, Antje Kroes, Bailey Malinowski and Sarah Ekosky.  The third place team was Emily Kolada, Hannah McRorie, Aaron Haak and Lennon Kuch.

The Club raised over $2650 for local Habitat projects.  Over twelve years, this event has raised over $28500 for Habitat.  The top individual fundraiser this year was Aaron Haak, who raised $728.  Other top pledge earners included Devyn Ballnace ($150) and Hunter Gamache ($135).

“We are impressed every year with the effort of our members to help make this event a success.  Our members worked hard this year to raise a lot of money for a very worthwhile cause,” commented Brian Jones, one of the club’s coaches.
