Selkirk Judo Club Collects Medals in Edmonton

The Selkirk Judo Club sent a team of 7 fighters to the Edmonton International tournament held at the West Edmonton Mall from April 1 – 3, 2011.  The tournament drew over 600 entries from across Canada.  Nine of those entries were from Selkirk, with two athletes competing in two divisions.

The Club returned with 5 gold and 2 silver medals.

Julien Mitchell (17, brown belt) won three matches in Senior Men Advanced under 100 kg before losing in the final to Robert Edwards, who ranked third at last year’s 2010 Senior Nationals.  Later in the day, in his regular age division (under 20 year olds), Julien defeated Josh Jensen of British Columbia to take gold.  In their last meeting, Jensen had defeated Julien in the preliminary rounds of the Canada Winter Games judo competition held in late February, en route to a silver medal at that competition.

Curtis McRae (37, 4th degree black belt), handily won his matches in the Veteran Men (35 – 39 years old) over 90 kg division, as did Jason Northwood (31, black belt) in the Veteran Men (30 – 34 years old) under 90 kg division.  Both earned gold medals.  Jason also finished 4th in the Senior Men Advanced under 90 kg division, with a record of 2 wins and 2 losses.

Damien Ekosky (11, green belt) won 5 straight matches in Boys (under 13 years), under 46 kg to take gold.  Melissa Haak (13, green belt) also finished first in Juvenile Women (under 15 years), under 57 kg.

Riley Malinowski (12, green) won silver in Juvenile Men (under 15 years) under 42 kg.

Stan McFarlane, a National B level referee from the Selkirk Club, was also on hand to assist with officiating at the two day competition.
