Mitchell wins silver in Florida

Julien Mitchell won silver at the US Junior Open Judo Championships in Fort Lauderdale, Florida held on August 1 – 2, 2009.  The tournament drew over 650 competitors.  It was a truly international event, with fighters from over 20 countries competing, from Iceland to The Bahamas to South Africa, and from across the United States.

Julien competed in the juvenile male (born 1993 – 1994) under 81 kg category.  There were 9 competitors in his division, including fighters from the United States and Suriname.  After compiling a record of 3 wins and 1 loss, Julien collected the silver medal in his division.

In his first match, Julien defeated Pablo Redden-Gonzalez of the United States.  He followed that victory with a second round win against Ryan Carroll of Coral Springs, Florida.  In the semi-final round, Julien defeated Allen Beyer of Winnetka, Illinois.  All three of his wins were by ippon, a full point.  In the final, Julien was defeated by Kai  Shin of Charlottesville, Virginia.

Julien’s victory follows his recent bronze medal at the Canadian Junior Nationals in Calgary in early July, his second bronze at nationals in the last two years.

Prior to the tournament, Julien participated in a training camp in Fort Lauderdale.  Approximately 100 fighters participated in the camp.

“Julien completed a grueling three day international training camp and followed that with an excellent performance at the US Open tournament.  This was a great finish to a very impressive competitive season,” said club coach Brian Jones.
